Winning is a Mindset, Not a Result

The company Let’s Go Win was not created to determine wins and losses but rather to embrace the process of having a winning mindset. The definition of mindset according to Merriam-Webster is “a mental attitude or inclination”. I believe that if we do not embrace a winning mindset then we have already lost. Henry Ford said it best “whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right”. If you want to change your life, you must first start with your mindset. Here are three keys to develop a winning mindset.

Daily Affirmations

Daily positive affirmations are statements that can help you overcome negative and self-sabotaging thoughts. These affirmations can be used to reprogram the subconscious mind, to help us believe certain things about ourselves. My wife and I believe in this theory so much that our two sons have recited the same affirmation every night before going to sleep. I ask them “Are you a leader”? They answer “yes”, and I ask, “how come”? They answer with “I’m confident, strong, intelligent, athletic, good looking, dynamic, popular, talented, independent boy with a growth mindset”. Obviously, it does not have to be that long and feel free to make it your own. It has reinforced who they believe they are regardless of what the outside world may say at any given time.

Practice Gratitude

Studies have shown that it is impossible to be mad or sad and thankful at the same time. A simple practice of saying 3 things that you are grateful for each morning takes less than 10 seconds and sets your mindset up to see the positivity happening in your world. We also like to do it as a family at the dinner table by asking each person what they are grateful for that day. It is hard not to smile when you think about the good that is surrounding you. “Be thankful for what you have: you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you'll never, ever have enough”. Oprah Winfrey

Surround Yourself with the Right People

People either lift you up or bring you down. This lesson has become more apparent the older I get. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. When you look at that group of 5, are you proud of what that looks like? This may be the most difficult exercise to do but it is arguably the most rewarding and life altering. It doesn’t mean that you have to completely cut out those that are bringing you down but if they are not helping you win, it is time to establish some healthy boundaries and find some new people to surround yourself with.

I recently saw a quote by Steve Maraboli that said, “once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it”. If you do not feel like you are winning, look at changing your mindset. I am a competitive person but in this game of life I believe in a Win-Win. Change your mindset to change your life!
